For an international project on the production of PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates), the research group Biobased Resource & Energy is going to look at a variety of GIS (geographical information system) analysis together with other project partners.
Dependent on multiple aspects like the type and capacity of a certain sewage treatment plant, it might be able to produce PHA using the primary and secondary sludge from that specific sewage treatment plant. In order to indicate whether or not this might be feasible, the CoE BBE created a decision support tool. The tool indicates the input stream for this sewage treatment plant is promising for PHA production, that a more detailed consideration is required or that PHA production is probably not feasible for this plant only.
With thew help of GIS, it is possible to do multiple types of analysis on optimizing transport within the chain of PHA production from sewage sludge on either centralized or decentralized locations. Also it can help deciding what location is most ideal for a processing plant.
You will process data through the decision support tool and perform GIS analysis with the outcomes to reduce transport distances and help deciding where to build a PHA processing plant.
Who we are
You will be working for the Biobased Resources & Energy research group within the Centre of Expertise Biobased Economy (CoE BBE). The Centre of Expertise Biobased Economy is powered by the Avans University of applied sciences and HZ University of applied sciences and helps businesses achieve their biobased goals by working with them to modernize higher professional education and to carry out applied research that makes a difference. The CoE BBE does this by producing highly skilled professionals who can support and shape the transition to a biobased society. The Biobased Resource & Energy research group is focusing on the production and use of biobased energy and the valorization of residual streams from nature, agricultural and industrial sources while cherishing the environment.
