Assignment description

In order to realize a sustainable circular society many materials and products that we use (such as plastics and polymers), and that are currently based on fossil oil need to be redeveloped/reinvented. Important aspects in this process are the use of biobased circular resources and the possibilities for recycling or complete biodegradation into harmless compounds.

At the Centre of Expertise Biobased Economy we are looking into the biodegradation of biopolymers and biocomposites. We focus on questions like can be degraded and what is the degradation rate? What are the intermediate and end products? And can we enhance biodegradation?

We are currently looking for a student with a background in (bio)chemistry that wants to join our research on biodegradation. The project will focus on two topics:

  • Biodegradation of protective PUR coatings implemented with products such as car seats, leather bags or furniture
  • Characterization of the coatings before and after degradation (TGA, FTIR, SEM, GPC…)

During the project you will perform laboratory tests on biodegradability of PUR coatings (using Oxitop) looking at degradation rate and the (intermediate) products of degradation. The biodegradability behavior will be compared with reference samples. Besides doing lab work on biodegradation you will also look into the possibility to enhance biodegradation using modification (literature study and possible lab work).

You will be working for the research group Biobased Resources & Energy and the research group Biobased Building Blocks & Products within the Centre of Expertise Biobased Economy (CoE BBE). The CoE BBE is powered by the Avans and HZ Universities of applied sciences and helps businesses achieve their biobased goals by working with them to modernize higher professional education and to carry out applied research that makes a difference. The Biobased Resource & Energy research group is focusing on valorizing residual streams from nature, agriculture or industrial sources and the production and use of biobased energy. The Biobased Building Blocks & Products research group is investigating the synthesis, processing and application of biobased polymers and high-grade fill materials made from biomass
