The Material Incubator (MI) is a new lab started by a collaboration of the Centre of Expertise Biobased Economy (CoEBBE) and the Centre of Applied Research for Art, Design and Technology (CARADT).
You will be based at : ‘s-Hertogenbosch
Work scope : 0,6 – 1,0 fte
Starting date: Immediately
As researcher and lab manager you will support the team of (international) researchers and supervise interns and graduates. You will continue and improve the research and will manage the laboratory in Den Bosch, guarantee the safety and maintain equipment and materials. In the long term there is an option for conducting independent research within either of the two research groups.
Managing the lab in combination with support and conducting research on mycelium composites and algae.
As researcher you will work both for the research group Biobased Building, which is part of CoEBBE, and for the research group Biobased Art & Design from CARADT. The research focuses on biobased materials made from mycelium (fungi) and algae, sometime bacteria are used. You have enthusiasm for practical research, especially in the field of microorganisms such as fungi and algae, which you like to share with other researchers and students.
As the lab is an independent research location at the Art Academy building and a cooperation between 2 research fields (biobased / microbiology and art & design), you need to feel comfortable in taking your own decisions and following procedures from 2 different parts of the organization. The laboratory education building and therefore expertise is located in the vicinity of the Art Academy Building, as well as the practical unit for research in Biobased Building, but you still need to navigate in the organization independently and manage the lab by yourself and take care of the inventory. Furthermore, you maintain the equipment and will not avoid solving any malfunctions. As manager of the lab, you also coordinate the activities of other lab users, amongst which students. You need to be confident in that role and take the lead.
In parallel, you do research together with the team, developing new insights, prepare analyses for the research and monitor the implementation.
You like a functional and tidy laboratory in which safe and responsible handling of microorganisms, chemicals and biological agents has your highest priority. You will have an important role in the planning and organization of the laboratory and are the main point of contact for the practical research. Due to the collaboration with multiple international researchers within the teams, but also among students, it is necessary that you have a good level of English.

The Material Incubator is a creative research lab, where different disciplines come together. It is a place where innovative materials are being developed. In the lab you will be working under Lector Willem Böttger (Biobased Building) and Elvin Karana (Biobased Art & Design) together with two research groups full of enthusiastic fellow researchers. With backgrounds in Biology, Microbiology, Physics, Environmental Science, Industrial Design and Art, it is an interesting mix of technical and practical knowledge.
As part of Avans University of Applied Sciences you are also closely related to education, consisting of a broad variety of disciplines. You will assist in practical work done by students, for example during their minor or as part of their internship or graduation. Some of the students wil not have (a lot of) lab experience prior to working in your lab. Furthermore, the lab is connected to the other research fields from the expertise centers and has a network with multiple external knowledge institutes and companies.
The Material Incubator enables highly educated professionals to contribute to the transition towards a biobased society. Scientists, designers, teachers and students work together to encourage the knowledge, research and education on biobased materials.
