The lifespan of a new biobased insulation material is an important characteristic. Nonetheless there is no defined and standardised method to determine the expected lifespan of a biobased insulation material rather than waiting the necessary 75 years. The aim of this project is to dive into this challenge, draw attention to it and propose a possible solution.

SDG's

The lifespan of a new biobased insulation material is an important characteristic, to

  1. Build proof of the durability in an early stage,
  2. Be able to make environmental impact calculations such as a Life Cycle Analysis and
  3. Be able to be included into databases such as the Nationale Milieu Database, Environdec and ÖKOBAUDAT.

This solution should be a reliable, repeatable and transparent method to determine the expected lifespan in a shorter period of time. Through learnings from literature and current practises this method will be defined. Then the method will be validated in a use case with mycelium bio-composites, an innovative biobased material with no defined lifespan. The results of this project are intended to draw attention for the issue of lifespan determination methodology. The defined method is intended to be applied to other innovative biobased insulation materials in future research projects of the lectoraat Biobased Building.
