Professor Han van Kasteren’s research group Biobased Building Blocks & Products is investigating the synthesis, processing and application of biobased polymers and high-grade fill materials made from biomass. Along with regional companies, research institutions and students, researchers and lecturing researchers work on projects in 2 areas of focus: building blocks made from biobased polymers and biobased fill materials.
The research group carries out research on building blocks made from biobased polymers (biobased plastics). By collecting knowledge about, for example, the insulating properties, modification and source of building blocks, we can develop materials with specific chemical and physical properties, such as easy degradability and recyclability. This is useful in closing plastic material cycles and making them circular.
The researchers are also searching for fill materials, made from biomass, that can be used as additives in cosmetics or plastics, for instance. These biobased alternatives can then be used to replace synthetic products such as dyes, plasticisers, flame retardants and stabilisers.
What does the research group have to offer?
The research group Biobased Building Blocks & Products works on technological solutions for company and social issues relating to the bio-based economy. We have a well-equipped laboratory for raw ingredient extraction, chemical modification, polymerisation and characterisation to enable us to do so. Collaboration with the Biopolymer Application Centre means that we can also develop prototypes and pilot series. In short, if you are looking for a solution or have a question about the bio-based economy, please contact us! We will be happy to explore whether and how we can address the issue and the possibilities for acquiring a grant to do so, together with you.
Students who want to work on our research projects are welcome and may, moreover, be eligible for contributions in the form of minor projects, work placements and graduation assignments.
