The team of Circular Emergency Shelter is looking for an intern interested in the design of decision-making tools, circularity, and humanitarian aid. Your role is to help Doctors without Borders make sustainable and circular decisions when they buy an emergency hospital for the crisis situations where they work around the globe. The tool you design should be easy to use, straightforward, easy to download with small band width, and adaptable in the future. You will work next to a team of experienced researchers that have a good understanding of the CO2 emissions behind the choices that can be made, from the Lectureship of New Materials and their Application, and the Lectureship Biobased Resources & Energy.

We also have close collaborations with tent designer and supplier Wijnroemer Relief Goods and the Red Cross in this project. Two graduation students and two small student teams have prepared criteria that help to make sustainable and circular choices. The ideal candidate has a good understanding and interest to support decisions that contribute to more sustainable and circular humanitarian aid. The candidate has an intrinsic motivation to make an impact for a better world through smart support tools. We are searching for someone full of ideas that can contribute to decisions with a hands-on attitude that can take a leading role in our team. We want to adapt the support tool to new information coming in throughout the process and adapt to the latest changes in the field of humanitarian aid and circular construction. We prefer a candidate who is eager to read existing literature and seeks for opportunities. As an assistant researcher, you will work approximately 60% on optimization of the tool, 20% interaction with stakeholders, 10% of reading and studying literature, 10% PR and communication of the results.

Your tasks

·        You study the earlier work of the team, and literature, and provide an overview of gaps and potential improvements.

·        You collect examples of decision support tools and make multiple designs that can be tested by or discussed with our partners.

·        You assist in organizing at least two meetings with our partners Doctors without Borders and Wijnroemer Relief Goods to discuss the tool and seek for potential improvements.

·        You have informal contact with other students that are part of this research project and monitor their progress and involvement.

We hope that you recognize yourself in at least some of the requirements below.

·        You are familiar with the topics addressed in the project, such as circularity, carbon emissions, decision-support tools, humanitarian assistance, emergency aid, shelter design

·        You have a fluent written and spoken command of English. Fluency in Dutch is an advantage.

·        You are organized and creative in the development of solutions

·        You can easily collaborate with team members

·        You have a demonstrated ability to organize activities

·        You are communicative and proactive

·        You can handle dynamic changes and act directly

·        Working experience with humanitarian organizations or at academic institutions is an advantage.
